Founded by the legendary Dr. D’Wayne Edwards, JEMS is inspired by Jan Ernst Matzeliger, a Black immigrant who in 1883 revolutionized shoe manufacturing with his patented lasting machine. At JEMS we provide not only the factory to make your shoes, but the tools and training to help launch them. Diversity is one of our core values. Honoring an Industry Pioneer

In 1883 a Black man who was a cobbler and shoemaker by the name of Jan Ernst Matzeliger dramatically changed the way shoes are made. His patented lasting machine increased production of shoes from 50 to 700 pairs a day, an invention that has become the foundation of modern-day shoe making. Tragically, Jan died before he was able to see the impact his invention would have on the world of footwear, and his story has been lost in the history books. In honor of Jan, Dr. D’Wayne Edwards, founder of Pensole Lewis College has named his ground-breaking factory JEMS, The Jan Ernst Matzeliger STU/DEO. At JEMS we strive not only to pay tribute to Jan’s legacy but also to pave the way for other future industry leaders.
